I would like to start by wishing the happy couple lots of happiness for their new and bright future together…. and also to apologise for taking so long to write this blog I promised them. It’s been a busy few months for Unita Designs as we have now opened our new office in the South of France and we are currently on the move to new premises. Lucy & James tied the knot after a lot of hard work preparing for their wedding in August last year. They asked Unita Designs to help them create a theme for their special day. Lucy knew exactly what she wanted and it was a pleasure to work with her & James. We designed and printed their Wedding invites, RSVP cards, Evening invites, Order of Service, Wedding Particulars card, Guest information card, Menu’s, Table name cards, Guest name cards and Table plan and also a Sign to illustrate where to place the gift cards.

One of our latest projects for last month was creating some silhouette wedding stationery for a lovely couple based in London.

I love creating simple, clean cards like this design and this one was a real challenge because of the surface area used on the silhouette of the couple. Anybody who knows about printing Letterpress will understand when they see the design. The key is to keep the silhouette small and use light colours. We bent all the rules with this design, but it came out a real treat and we are so proud of the final product. I will update you on this blog when the happy couple has tied the knot.

Silhouette of the happy couple!

1.	Turning up always gets the day off to a good start!!

2.	Believe it or not It’s not about you so don’t go overboard trying to stand out, you don’t want to out shine the bride believe me!

3.	Discuss your attire with your fiancé so that you can coordinate if necessary, remember your children will be passing not too complimentary comments about your suit in 15 or so years from now.

4.	The Best Man, make sure he really is the best man for the job as it’s not just about getting drunk, he can be very helpful on the day if you pick the right one.

5.	Help with the planning, I know your fiancé will have a vice like grip on the planning but you can at least deal with the cars and other logistical aspects for example, leave it to her and you might well be leaving in a pink mini!

6.	Work with your best man and plan to add a bit of fun to the day, just a few simple touches that will brighten the day for everyone, usually at your expense, trust yourself, you know your audience.

7.	Proof read the best mans speech or better still work together on it, you really don’t want a crude speech delivered to a few drunken guys in the corner! It needs to appeal to all (children may be present) the look on your brides face will tell you all you need to know on the day.

8.	Don’t forget to work on your toasting skills, it rounds thing off nicely and makes all those involved feel appreciated. Flowers for the Mothers always helps so arrange this.

9.	If you are not given a free hand with the honeymoon destination (which I seriously doubt you will be) then at least plan a few little extras for when you’re there, a balloon ride, diving (scuba!), sightseeing…..etc, it’s better to plan ahead to make life more relaxed when you’re there.

10.	One last thing, don’t forget you may well have to pay for some things on the day so make sure either you or your best man have enough cash to stump up, a scene over non-payment of a bill on the day to say the least is unadvisable!

1.	When having your hair styled where a button fronted shirt, you don’t want to end up looking like you’ve been through a hedge backwards after changing.

2.	Always wear neutral underwear, it may not look sexy but will save you the embarrassment of having people express their opinions on your chosen (visible) knickers.

3.	If you have a dress that goes over your head, use a silk underskirt on your head to avoid removing your beautifully made up face with the inside of your dress.

4.	Remove any labels off the bottom of your shoes before your wedding day, as this can not only take some time to do, but saves you the embarrassment of displaying your wedding budget for all to see.

5.	Get somebody to help you dress if you have a buttoned or lace-up dress, even if it were physically possible you’ll be either too nervous or too excited to do it yourself.

6.	Break in your wedding shoes prior to your wedding day, no don’t go shopping in them but do wear them around the house for a few hours at a time (preferably when your other half is out).

7.	Always dress the bride first, she can turn up without her entourage, it’s not the same the other way around.

8.	Never dress the bridesmaids in white could be a confusing time, although it does have the potential to be entertaining for the guests.

9.	Being a great bride means being a great hostess and making sure your guests know how happy you are that they came to share in your special day so keep smiling even if you forgot to break in those shoes!

10.	And finally ‘The secret of a happy marriage………… well I suppose that will always remain a secret’.

1.	Plan….plan and plan some more………..did I mention the importance of planning! It’s going to be a difficult enough day without realizing you forgot to book the florist.

2.	Delegate, honestly, you might want everything to be just as you planned but you can’t do everything yourself, put some faith (and a feeling of participation) in those close to you I promise they’ll thank you for it and your day will be less stressful.

3.	For all you future brides out there reading this (I suspect most of you are girls) let the guy in your life have his say in the planning, you might not like it but it’s his day too!! (anyway, if you plan early enough he’ll have forgotten by the time it comes around and you’ve done it your way after all).

4.	When looking for the dress always carry a pair of neutral coloured heels and always remember that you’re about to be seen in your underwear!

5.	Stay calm! I know easier said than done but when the tension builds just take a quiet minute and remind yourself why you’re doing this.

6.	For all you guys out there wondering what all the stress is about simply put yourself in her shoes for a day and look at how you can help, don’t pretend it’s months away and ignore the issues.

7.	Remember you can’t please everyone all the time so to hell with them. It’s your day, they’ll still turn up!

8.	If the groom starts to lose interest (and believe me he will!) just remind him that he is in line for three free tickets to get drunk, stag doo, wedding day and of course the honeymoon. Never fails.

9.	Smile, if you’re enjoying it then everyone else will be.

10.	Remember that we’re here to help you and make your day as memorable as possible.

We recently printed a set of wedding stationery for a couple who are living in Switzerland, what initially looked like a straight forward request took an interesting (and challenging) twist when they requested that the stationery be written in not just English but German and Polish as well! The bride and grooms names are de-bossed in a elegant script typeface which creates a deep impression and a beautiful tactile sumptuous invite.

Our client requested specific colours on there invites to co-ordinate with there wedding theme. Creating the invites and RSVP cards in three languages was a great job and we were over the moon with the finished product.

I have been working in the design industry for 15 years and developed my career through companies such as Fine Décor, Crowson Fabrics, Abelia Décor and Hallmark Cards.
I was working for Graham & Brown Wallcoverings when I became pregnant with our first child. Due to travel commitments, as I was working on the French and Russian market, I decided to resign and to do some freelance work until Chloe was born, she is now two years old.
I did have a bigger plan in mind while all this was happening, and we started to put the wheels in motion in December 2008, when I was kindly given an Arab press by a man called Andrew McNeille by Clutag Press, archive in the Bodleian Library. Originally the Press was used by the poet John Fuller for his Sycamore Press, archive in the Bodleian Library.
Andrew gave us the press if we could organise the removal of it, as it is a rather large press and very expensive to transport.
As my husband is an engineer, he was able to renovate the vintage ARAB platen press for me and it’s now very much part of our family.

The company was founded in September 2007 and when the press arrived in December 2008.
I started working on new design ideas and training myself to work the press.
I commissioned our website to be developed in October 2009 when I felt I had enough designs to take the business to the next level. This took a further 8 months to develop, as I had a very clear-cut idea of how I wanted the website to look. Blueclaw Media Ltd have done a great job at replicating my vision and the website finally went live around the middle of July 2010.
I have been doing lots commission work for bespoke designs in the last year and hopefully we will start to get orders rolling in with our big publicity push this month.

If I had to describe letter press printing to you it can be done so quite easily by simply handing over a sample of our letterpress stationery to be examined and touched.
As it’s not always possible to touch our Letterpress invites we have attempted to recreate the experience of letterpress in our photography.
Our belief is that no other printing process comes close to the sumptuous elegance that the deep impression of letterpress leaves when seen for the first time. From its inception in the mid-fifteenth century, when Johannes Gutenberg developed the process, until relatively recently, loose type was meticulously arranged and the skill of the printer lay in allowing the type to merely kiss the paper leaving no indentation what so ever. Today however this has all changed with many contemporary printers utilising sophisticated software packages to generate intricate designs that can be transformed into as few as one printing block and deliberately looking for a deep impression in the paper in order to bring their designs to life by adding depth and feel to their craft.
At Unita Design we combine modern technology in our Mac with a 100 plus year old ARAB platen press, thus allowing for very intricate designs to be transformed into the majesty of letterpress. It clearly oozes creativity, tradition, authenticity and beauty.

We have a mix of contemporary and traditional designs on our website which consists of engagement invites, save the date cards, wedding invites, evening reception invites, reply cards, directions and maps, wedding detail cards, order of service, place names, table numbers, menu cards, seating plans and thank you cards. Our portfolio consists of original designs that are letterpress printed and we also offer the same designs digitally printed. We also specialise in developing designs from our customers inspiration to create something unique and personal for you.

The invitation is the first piece of your wedding that your guests will experience, therefore it should set the tone and style of your special day.

We are in the process of developing a new collection, which should be available in shops early next year. I will keep you posted on further information.
